And then, when everything’s finalized, the team will announce the winners on September 11.

Guidelines for a valid TOWER Defense Game Jam entry

As I mentioned above, you need to create your tower defense game using The Sandbox’s Game Maker software. You may include original assets that you yourself have created. Your game also needs to be playable. That means it would help if you’d add quests and missions for players to fulfill.

If you had created a The Sandbox experience before, your entry for this special TOWER x The Sandbox Game Jam needs to be different. You may get inspiration from your previous creation, but your entry into this promo needs to be unique.

To filter entries, The Sandbox x TOWER collab team also emphasized that you can’t just spam the submissions with low-quality experiences. You may even be disqualified.

Both The Sandbox’s and TOWER’s staff members will judge the entries, so make sure to please both worlds.

By the way, here are the more detailed guidelines for each entry:

• The game length needs to be at least 5 minutes. This excludes timed and collection quests.
• You need to use at least 25 different assets.
• Follow the theme. Your game should be a tower defense experience, much like the game Crazy Defense Heroes.
• Only entries created after the start date (July 25) are acceptable. If you’ve built some for previous game jams, you can’t submit them here.

Ubisoft was bold, but fans didn’t like it

Ubisoft was the first to incorporate NFTs in one of its games, Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Sadly, the company had to stop improving the game after 11 updates since the game’s 2019 launch. Quartz Digits, the game’s NFTs, saw its final release in March this year.

While Ubisoft was bold enough to make the first NFT move, its existing gamers didn’t seem to like it. Ghost Recon Breakpoint, for instance, only had a very limited player base. So, it didn’t make sense, financially speaking, for the company to continue supporting the game.

Still, Ubisoft is willing to add NFTs to its future games. It insists that “gamers don’t get what a digital secondary market can bring to them.” Apparently, the Ubisoft leadership is hopeful for an eventual wider adaptation for NFTs in traditional AAA games.

EA Games are having second thoughts  

EA CEO Andrew Wilson has once expressed his interest in “collectible digital content,” saying it could play a meaningful part in the company’s future. But, over the course of 2022’s second half, he seems to have been reevaluating things.

Wilson says the NFTs and the blockchain, as applied in games, are not something they’re focused on. For now, they just want to give players the best experience possible. And, if players don’t like having NFTs in games, then EA will rather have nothing to do with them, too.

Nintendo is interested but confused

Reportedly, Nintendo has some interest in the metaverse and non-fungible tokens. But, like EA, it wants to prioritize players.  In particular, Nintendo isn’t sure about what kinds of “joy” the NFTs could bring to its players.

Nintendo wants to continue to be a company that proposes entertainment, and if they’re still confused about how to deliver that through NFTs, then they’ll likely not make the move.

Square Enix is finally making Final Fantasy NFTs

Previously, Square Enix has only been toying with the idea of non-fungible tokens in its games. Fans have been concerned, that’s why the game company has to put off pushing NFTs. 

Luckily for blockchain and NFT believers, Square Enix is partnering with the blockchain company Enjin to create a digital card collection. These NFT cards will serve to celebrate Final Fantasy VII’s 25th anniversary. 

There’s also a physical action figure to accompany Enjin’s NFT digital certificate of authenticity and the digital version of the figure. By the way, you can pre-order this action figure here.

Why are big game companies hesitant about NFTs?

For those who aren’t fangirling over non-fungible tokens and play-to-earn games, NFTs are just another way for game companies to make money out of players. But, those who see the potential and want to take advantage of GameFi are willing to take chances.

Big game companies, especially those with millions of fans, would understandably want to take careful steps, or else they could lose a huge chunk of their player base.

If you find it a little disappointing that game companies seem to be slow adaptors of NFTs in games, you don’t have to waste your energy on hoping they would.

Reward Pools for July and August

Meanwhile, Tier 2 requires 450,000–600,000 XP. Players reaching these numbers will enjoy a prize pool of 600,000 TOWER. The TOWER tokens are much less, but that’s because there will be fewer players who’ll get to the second tier. It’ll be much more challenging to get to Tier 2.

Finally, players who get 600,001 XP and up will share 300,000 TOWER. Plus, each one who will get to the top 10% of players will have one Elite Badge NFT.

Crazy Defense Heroes Avatar Levels and XPs

What does 315,000 XP look like?

Every time you win a battle in Crazy Defense Heroes (CDH), you will need to gain experience points (XP). Certain XPs are required for you to progress from one avatar level to the next.

Hint: If you don’t plan on buying extra lives or gems or maps, and all you want is to play for free, then you can get one avatar level higher per day. At least that’s been my experience so far.

Suppose you started at Avatar Level 20 in July 2022. That’s equivalent to 250,000 XP. To gain 315,000 XP more—that is, to qualify for Tier 1 of TOWER rewards—you’ll need to have 250,000 + 315,000 XP = 565,000 XP in total. And that’s equivalent to Avatar Level 29.

And, given the hint I gave you a while ago, Avatar Level 29 looks like it’s doable in just 9 days.

That means you can aspire for more. You can gain more than 450,000 avatar XP within the month. If you do that, you can earn your share of both Tier 1 and Tier 2 Reward Pools. 

What’s crazy (in a very good way) is that you can earn TOWER from all the 3 Tiers if you gain more than 600,000 avatar XP!

If you want to be geeky, you can see this table some Crazy Defense Heroes fans have made to learn how much XP you’ll have to gain to reach certain avatar levels and vice versa. There’s even a calculator!

What is Crazy Defense Heroes?

Crazy Defense Heroes is a tower defense and card strategy game. It’s free to play on iOS and Android but it also has play-to-earn mechanics, which I’ve just described roughly above. That is, if you earn TOWER from this game, you can exchange it for other crypto or even real-world fiat currency.

Produced by Animoca Brands, Crazy Defense Heroes is promising when it comes to giving players earning potential and game satisfaction. Initially, I thought it was just a game for lazy players. But, it turns out it can be pretty challenging as you reach higher avatar levels and you won’t opt for the auto-play.

What’s in the Gala Games Town Crush Challenge?

So how about we discuss two of my favorite F2P games thus far?

Crazy Defense Heroes

Crazy Defense Heroes (CDH) is a highly promising play-to-earn game, but it’s also free to play.

We’ve already covered a few things about how fun it is to play. But, since that overview piece is a little older than this one, let me just add that CDH gets crazier as you move up to Avatar Level15 and more.

Compared to non-F2P P2E games, getting wins and earnings on CDH may not be that easy. The earning potential comes from gaining TOWER tokens, but a TOWER token doesn’t have as much value yet compared to other game tokens.

Still, I’m hoping to get more TOWER as I continue to play Crazy Defense Heroes. So far, I’ve never bought anything to enjoy the game. And that’s exactly the beauty of free-to-play.

Thetan Arena

Similar to CDH, Thetan Arena also allows you to play the game right away without having to invest in anything. You can use a free normal hero to join battles. Your goal is to earn as many Thetan Coins ($THC) as you can.

You ask: is the free-to-play version good enough?

Yeah, it’s fun. But it can get frustrating especially if you find yourself always getting hit by enemies while in battle.

That being said, you can enjoy Thetan Arena just for the gameplay itself.

What is Blankos Block Party?

Blankos Block Party is a creation game in a multiplayer universe. Interestingly, like many other metaverse games, this “universe” is something you own and build.

Each “Blanko,” i.e., the universe’s character, is a non-fungible token (NFT). That means you get to own it for real. A Blanko also holds a certain value, so you can resell it in the Blankos marketplace.

By the way, a Blanko is a “digital vinyl toy.” It’s characteristically fun and mischievous.

The “block party” part in this Blankos game is what the “creation” rationale is all about. Basically, you get to design and build all sorts of party games!

And no—you don’t need to be a genius developer to “design” these party games. All you need is a bit of creativity. No coding skills are required.

Can you play Blankos Block Party now?

Yes! And that’s the quick answer. Blankos has an early access version that is now playable for PCs and macOS devices. 

If you count yourself a creative and fun person, you might enjoy even the soft launch (i.e., “Early Access” release) of this game. Right now, you can explore Blankos Block Party for free.

Is Blankos Block Party free to play?

Well yes, according to their website, Blankos is a free-to-play NFT game. But, you got the option to purchase in-game cosmetics—you know, things that make the gameplay, especially your own block parties, more interesting.

There are also limited edition Blankos, i.e., those NFTs that might go astoundingly high up in value later on.

That means you got the potential to earn from Blanko NFTs that you buy and sell. So, it’s not really the typical “play to earn” model, but more like “play and earn.”

What makes Blankos Block Party stand out from other NFT games?

Blankos hasn’t forgotten about the “fun” that’s supposed to be in the very nature of video games. I know some hardcore mainstream gamers hate NFT games because they’re a little bit dull and boring, but that’s not really true about Blankos.

This open-world multiplayer experience allows you to explore games that other users have designed. It’s all about world-building and exploration.

In other words, it can be suitable for you if you can play extroverted behind a screen and get creative with colors and shapes as much as you want.

While Blankos is yet to launch inside Epic Games, you can actually start playing it right now and party up! In your own block parties, you get to decide whether it’s about shooters or racers, or basically whatever else you can think about.
