When we talk about NFTs, we think of crypto prices, trends, gas fees, and the market cap. NFT games allow you to learn these through a gamified experience. Free-to-play is a type of NFT game that doesn’t require any upfront cost to set off.

One of the leading free-to-play NFT games is Gods Unchained—a trading card game that also allows players to earn without initial investment. You can head out to our other guide to learn more about this game.

And another thing…

It’s important to keep in mind that there are several ways these free-to-play NFT games work. Some free games heavily rely on random number generators (RNG). Others may feature pay-to-win mechanics to keep the best in-game assets hidden behind paywalls.

Let’s discuss some more free-to-play games waiting for you to check them out!

Ethermon

Native currency: EthermonToken (EMON)

Ethermon is a Pokemon-inspired crypto game based on the Ethereum blockchain where you can catch, raise, transform, and trade virtual creatures called “Mons.” Previously called Etheremon, the very first NFT battle game on Ethereum, this game was relaunched in 2019 with an entirely new team. Players from the old version can continue to use their old and new Mons to join forces and make their permanent mark in the blockchain.

These Mons are the NFT collectibles players acquire to engage in skill-based battles with other players and receive token rewards called Emon, the in-house currency. Currently, there are over 230 known Mon classes, ranging from gason to mythic.

How to play

The moment you connect your Metamask wallet to the game and finish creating your account, you will receive your first three starter mons. These are free and completely yours. You can train them and eventually use them to catch new Ethermons to add to your collection, undertake adventures, or participate in battles. Once your mons reach a certain level of power or skill, you can choose to sell them on either the Ethermon Market or the OpenSea Market.

When you’re ready for tournament battles, make sure you have enough energy as each battle requires 2 energy. However, energy is limited and will automatically recharge every 12 hours. Also, make sure to consider type advantages and strategize your team formation before entering the arena. If you think your mons aren’t ready yet and you want to start feeling the heat of the game, you always have the option to invest in leveled-up mons for increased chances of winning and faster progress.

On another note, Ethermon trainers can now take their mons to explore Decentraland, a decentralized 3D world that’s also making waves in the industry. Watch your mons grow and evolve into stronger Ethermons that’ll help you reach the battle ladders and bag rewards.

Dragonary

Native currency: Coinary Tokens (CYT)

Dragonary is a blockchain-based multiplayer RPG developed by Coinary with a native token of the same name. It’s devloped on the Binance Smart Chain and is currently available across several platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.

This game is set in a fantasy kingdom called Dragonaria where you get to create eggs, fuse dragons, enhance their stats, and increase their rarity. There are seven dragon elements to choose from, each one with unique abilities:

  • Air
  • Water
  • Fire
  • Earth
  • Electric
  • Plant
  • Ice
  • Poison (new)

Players start with dragons of Common and Uncommon rarities. These do not sit in the blockchain, hence, they’re not tradable. The other four rarities, however, are NFTs that players can trade in the Coinary Hub marketplace. These are Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Mythical.

There are several ways to acquire NFTs in the game. You can find NFTs by exploring dungeons or competing in PvP Combat Mode and Tournament Mode, which requires a team of five Rare dragons or higher.

One thing Dragon owners have been looking forward to in 2022 are the islands, which are NFTs as well that can be utilized by the players. Dragonary islands are set to be released on the 20th of January.

Upland

Native currency: UPX

If you want a game that’s more laid-back yet just as challenging, this Monopoly-inspired NFT board game is worth a try. Upland is a blockchain game designed to give players the ability to buy and trade virtual real estates that are mapped to the real world.

Players can build properties over the lands they’ve purchased and earn UPX coins. Besides trading properties, you can also engage in other fun activities such as treasure hunting to spice up the game and earn rewards in the process. Learn numerous game tricks and increase your earnings as you play.

If you’re in a rush to grow your assets, you can always purchase the game’s utility coin UPX. These coins aren’t tradable on exchanges but you can withdraw your earnings in fiat currencies, thanks to the game’s integration with Linden Lab.

Upland is one of the most advertised free-to-play NFT games, and for a good reason. It’s now playable on Android, iOS, and Web browsers.

Forest Knight

Native currency: KNIGHT

This turn-based strategy mobile NFT game features an epic adventure that follows a captivating storyline of Heroes with unique abilities and weapons, armor, and accessories exclusively designed for each of them. You can build your own team of heroes that have all journeyed from different realms to join forces and defeat the Skeleton Master, a formidable foe. The game also proudly exhibits its diverse lands, creatures, and experiences—all these you can find on the game map.

Forest Knight focuses on both PVE and PVP. It provides a fully developed economy that is based on token standards and it’s powered by Ethereum and Polygon Layer 2.

Forest Knight currently features its first-ever expansion on OpenSea—Gamrey’s Deep expansion Initial NFT Offering. Gamrey’s Deep is the game’s vast underwater area where three treasure chests lie full of NFTs and waiting to be discovered. These limited-edition NFTs are minted on the Polygon framework and exclusive only to this INO. The chests became available in the marketplace on the 19th of January. Learn more about this project on the game’s website.

How to play

All players start their journey at Chronville. The objective is to advance through different levels, gain experience, and level up your heroes by equipping them with unique and powerful NFT items and weapons. They have to attain level 6 before they’re allowed to go head to head against other players in the PvP Arena. They can reach this by completing the story in the Campaign Mode.

Earn rewards by winning challenges in the Arena and receive NFTs and other digital assets each time you finish a mission. There are over 100 items and counting as the game continues to build partnerships and work on further developments.

Thetan Arena

Native currency: Thetan Coin (THC)

The last on our list is Thetan Arena, an e-sports multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) developed by WolfFun. This game allows players to team up with their friends and battle against other players from around the world to earn rewards. Its gameplay is designed to combine individual skills, teamwork, and strategy for an exciting gaming experience.

Thetan Arena is suitable for all types of gamers. Whether you’re a hardcore gamer looking for a real challenge or just casually playing, this game is guaranteed to give you a good time. How much you invest doesn’t matter since this is a skill-based game that offers possibilities for you to compete. Just equip your favorite heroes with a wide selection of weapons and get ready for a fierce fight that awaits you on the battlefield.

How to play

As soon as you finish signing up with your email, you will receive three normal heroes to start. Each one of them is from three different hero categories: Assassins, Marksman, and Tank. These three will help you progress in the game and obtain enough tokens (Thetan Coin) to unlock premium heroes on the Thetan Marketplace. Keep in mind that free heroes are not tradable and have limitations. They are not allowed to participate in Special Events and cannot evolve into Thetan heroes. When you’re ready, you can go ahead and join a battle with random players.

Players can choose among five different game modes where they can play with friends or match randomly with other players.

  • Battle Royale
  • Deathmatch
  • Superstar
  • Tower Siege
  • Custom mode

Battle Royale is a solo/duo survival mode where 42 players/21 duos battle against each other to find the last man/pair standing. Deathmatch is a traditional player-versus-player mode where players team up in groups of 4. Both of these come with updates and attractive rewards.

The game holds four types of special events periodically: campaign, collection, leadership competition, and war. These allow the players to join the battlefield and earn special rewards. To reach the leaderboards, you might have to invest more time playing. Learn more about Thetan Arena in our other post. Check it out!

Make hay while the sun shines

Although free-to-play allows players to immerse themselves in the world of NFT games without purchasing anything right off the bat, buying your very own virtual assets offers you a more epic gaming experience. Take this chance to begin your NFT game investment but, with the ebbs and flows of crypto, always remember to take a look before you leap.
