What is Play-to-Earn? What is Free to Play? A Guide to the World of NFT Games

Non-fungible tokens or NFTs have found many applications over the years, and that includes blockchain games. When it comes to games on the blockchain or those that involve NFTs, there are at least two terms that you hear pretty often. These are play-to-earn or P2E and free-to-play or F2P.

In this article, we’ll unpack these terms and give you a few samples of which games belong to which categories.

Let’s get it on!

What is play-to-earn in blockchain gaming?

Play2Earn means what it says exactly: you play a game to earn from it. Some games have evolved to “play and earn,” which means the primary experience isn’t just about the earning potential. It’s also about enjoying the game itself.

Top play-to-earn games

We’ve already covered a lot of play2earn games, but we’ll talk about two popular ones here and see how they’re allowing you to “earn.”

Axie Infinity

Undoubtedly, Axie Infinity is one of those games you hear about all the time. But, it’s always worth mentioning this game. It’s still alive and well, and yes, it’s evolving.

With play-to-earn games, one essential factor is what you’d call game “tokens.” Traditionally, you would play a mobile game and then, every time you win battles or rounds, you get rewarded with those gold-looking coins.

Now guess what, Axie Infinity has SLP (Smooth Love Potion) as an in-game token. You can earn SLPs when you gain victory as an Axie player.

You ask: is the “earning” potential here useful in the real world? The answer is a resounding yes. In fact, some players from southeast Asia have cashed out enough to buy a house.

Town Star

Like many other play-to-earn games, I’ve also already covered Town Star in great detail, especially on the earning part.

So, suffice it to say for now that Town Star belongs to the Gala Games collection. That means you could expect it to continue to have improvements over time.

So, just a quick overview here before you go in deep: you can actually earn up to $200 a day from playing Town Star! It’s actually… surprise, surprise, free to play, too.

You ask: what does that mean? Well, that question transitions us smoothly into the next section below.

What does free-to-play mean in NFT games?

Many play-to-earn games are also free to play. That means you can download the game app and play it right away.

Unfortunately, not all play2earn games have a free2play version. In Axie Infinity, for example, you need to invest at least around $200 to get your own Axies.

But don’t lose hope just yet. We got you some P2E games that are also F2P.

Top free-to-play games

Free-to-play games are just like your mainstream video games. You’re in them for fun!

But, what if your F2P game also gives you an earning potential later on? You didn’t invest money in it, but you did invest your time.

So how about we discuss two of my favorite F2P games thus far?

Crazy Defense Heroes

Crazy Defense Heroes (CDH) is a highly promising play-to-earn game, but it’s also free to play.

We’ve already covered a few things about how fun it is to play. But, since that overview piece is a little older than this one, let me just add that CDH gets crazier as you move up to Avatar Level15 and more.

Compared to non-F2P P2E games, getting wins and earnings on CDH may not be that easy. The earning potential comes from gaining TOWER tokens, but a TOWER token doesn’t have as much value yet compared to other game tokens.

Still, I’m hoping to get more TOWER as I continue to play Crazy Defense Heroes. So far, I’ve never bought anything to enjoy the game. And that’s exactly the beauty of free-to-play.

Thetan Arena

Similar to CDH, Thetan Arena also allows you to play the game right away without having to invest in anything. You can use a free normal hero to join battles. Your goal is to earn as many Thetan Coins ($THC) as you can.

You ask: is the free-to-play version good enough?

Yeah, it’s fun. But it can get frustrating especially if you find yourself always getting hit by enemies while in battle.

That being said, you can enjoy Thetan Arena just for the gameplay itself.

Start your journey into free-to-play and play-to-earn gaming

Whether you’re a newbie or a hardcore mainstream gamer, you can begin taking advantage of the blockchain gaming space.
Explore more play-to-earn titles or dabble in free-to-play games first. It’s your call.
