What are the Different Types of NFT Games

February 11, 2022

First off… what are NFTs?

NFTs are digital assets that sit on the blockchain. Unlike other cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, NFTs are nonfungible, meaning they are irreplaceable and cannot be forged. Buyers don’t necessarily purchase NFTs for their quality, but the ownership rights. They are traded in digital marketplaces at prices that rely on the trend.

There are several types of NFTs—ranging from virtual fine art to web domain. NFT games are another type of method to get into the NFT space. NFTs in games represent usable in-game assets such as avatars, vehicles, weapons, accessories, and utility tokens. Since NFT games are decentralized, these items can be monetized into fiat by trading them on various secondary marketplaces outside of the game’s platform.

At its core, NFT games basically offer players true ownership of the assets they paid for within the game, which they can choose to either sell right away or keep until the prices inflate. This is a clever and effective utilization of NFTs that has allured droves of gamers worldwide into the crypto space through a gamified learning experience. It furnishes players with advantageous features and rewards in the game that are unique and truly theirs.

So, what are the types of NFT games?

Action

Games that fall under the Action category are some of the most immersive ones. Action games require constant hand-eye coordination, precise aim, and quick reaction time. Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games and some strategy games are considered action games.

The players pass through levels in the game by battling enemies with their weapons and raw skill. The game levels typically end by defeating a boss or when the player character runs out of lives. NFTs in these games include avatars, equipment, and special abilities. One of the Action NFT games we recommend is Thetan Arena—a fun action sports NFT game that’s also a MOBA.

Adventure

Perhaps one of the most sought-after types of NFT games, adventure is a narrative-based category of games that offer real experiences, an interactive storyline, and a virtual environment. The player assumes the role of a protagonist that navigates the world by exploration and puzzle-solving. Two of the most successful adventure games today are Minecraft and The Walking Dead. NFT assets in these games include costumes or skins, exclusive tickets, and power upgrades.

Some Adventure blockchain games you can try are Age of Rust, a shooter adventure game, and Mercenary, a P2E game full of expeditions you will enjoy.

Arcade

Arcade NFT games are basically the arcade games we know and love, but blockchain-based. Think Pong, Battle City, Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong. Like real-life arcade video games, arcade NFT games offer frantic and addictive gameplay that is no less fun than the more modern ones—and it uses the classic controls!

NFTs in this category depends on the game and its mechanics. Arcade action games, for example, are a sub-category that focuses on the user’s reflexes and strategy skills. An example of this is CryptoTanks, a new take on the Battle City game where every tank is an NFT that sits on the blockchain.

Casino

Games you can find in most casinos are playable as crypto games, but played with NFTs instead of real cash. Just like in a casino game, the players gamble casino chips or cash on seemingly unpredictable, random possible outcomes. The asset value for playing casino games is represented by NFTs. You can try your luck in casinos and play like James Bond with these NFTs games:

Fantasy Sports

Fantasy sports games, also called Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), are games that involve the skills of real-life professional athletes. In these games, users select a team of players to compete in leagues. These players are NFTs that will benefit the users with surplus rewards and points based on their actual statistical performance in real-life matches and championships.

This type of NFT game is similar to casino games as it’s also considered gambling. The role of the user is basically to select and manage their team of players according to their judgment of the players’ potential to win. One of the most famous fantasy sports crypto games is Sorare. Learn more about this game on our other guide to the best NFT games.

Open-world / Simulation

Open-world or Simulation NFT games are virtual ecosystems designed to closely simulate real-world activities. There are no strictly defined goals in the game. Players simply control their avatars or characters to move around in the environment. They can purchase virtual lands, build houses, step up their career ladder, and even create and expand their families.

These games allow players to design their own space using their creativity and earn from them. NFTs in simulation games are assets like real estate, vehicles, and clothes. One of the simulation games you can try now is The Sandbox Blockchain. We’ve written a brief guide to this fast-growing open-world game.

Puzzle

This type of nft game emphasizes conceptual challenges and puzzle-solving. Many of the puzzle video games test the player’s problem-solving skills, spatial recognition, logic, sequence solving, and pattern recognition. This genre is also incorporated in other game genres such as Adventure, but those that fall under the puzzle games genre focus primarily on puzzle solving. One of the top puzzle NFT games you can play is Mimir Quiz, a P2E turn-based casual puzzle game you will surely enjoy.

Racing

Among the different types of NFT games, this one is perhaps the most straightforward in terms of gameplay. It’s an entertaining type of game that covers a huge audience because of its easy controls and clear-cut goal which is to win the race. The virtual assets depend on the type of vehicle used in the game. Mostly, these are trinkets, other car parts and accessories, the car or motorbike, player gears like the helmet and uniform, and even the player character itself.

If you want to try this one out, you can start with REVV Racing. It’s a car racing game built on the Polygon network and created by Animoca Brands. Check out our entry on this to learn more.

Sports

Sports or eSports are games set in a competitive environment. It’s not to be confused with Fantasy sports where the user simply manages a team of players. eSports actually involves player-versus-player (PvP) gameplay mechanics where users battle against other players and bag prizes using their own skills. In eSports, you are the player.

Sports NFT games provide real experience with a realistic gaming environment, thanks to the visuals that improved over the years. Digital assets in these games include equipment, weapons, and clothes. For the games you can try now, we recommend F1® Delta Time, another racing game developed by Animoca Brands that runs on the Ethereum blockchain. Another eSports NFT game worth trying is ZED Run, a digital horseracing game, which we’ve written about briefly in one of our guides to top Polygon games.

Strategy games

Strategy games or Grand Strategy games are an expansive type of NFT games with highly sought-after sub-genres. Among the many types of NFT strategy games, these are some of the most popular ones:

  • Role-playing Games (RPG)
    • MMORPG
  • Player-versus-player (PvP) Battle Games
    • Multiplayer Online Battle Arena
  • Tower-defense

Role-playing games (RPG) allow the players to assume the role of the protagonist in a fictional setting where there’s a structured narrative and decision-making process to progress in the game. Players complete quests as they go on to finish the story. This is, however, done in single-player mode. Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) are a category of RPGs that allow multiple players from different servers to join together in a co-op whether locally or not. They usually gather in one space whether to team up and fight a boss together or go on warfare—battling each other as teams.

Ember Sword is one of the highly-anticipated high-performing MMORPG with quality graphics and storyline. If you want one that you play now, there’s also Chainmonsters—a Pokemon-inspired MMORPG where players catch, train, trade, and take chainmons into battles.

Similarly, PvP also allows users to go head-to-head with other players in the platform, alone. Tower defense tests the player’s tactical skills and decision-making as well in the heat of the battle. It’s a type of NFT game where the goal is to defend your tower and keep it standing as the war goes on and enemies wreak havoc in your area. One of the tower-defense games we recommend is Crazy Defense Heroes, a strategy card tower-defense game. Learn more about this game in our latest guide to free-to-play games.

Trading card games (TCG)

Also called collectible card games (CCG) and online card games, TCG has seen its recent popularity over the years, especially at the beginning of the pandemic. In this type of NFT game, players collect trading cards of different heroes with different levels of power and special abilities.

These cards are used to fight in matches with other players, which are also the digital assets or NFTs that can be traded in the marketplace. Gods Unchained is one of the TCGs that has established its name in the industry as now one of the most recommended collectible NFT card games. If you want some more TCG recommendations, visit our guide to the top NFT card games you can play now.
