Are you new to Splinterlands? Or are you playing the game already? I have good news for you. In this article, I will be showing you my top ten ways to make money in Splinterlands.
Did you know that you don’t even always have to play the game to make money from Splinterlands? Well, now you do. Read on to find out all the many ways you can earn some cool cash from Splinterlands.
By the way, if you’re new to NFT gaming, I recommend you check out this guide first. It’s a comprehensive beginner guide into the world of NFT gaming. And if you’re still testing the waters before finally camping with Splinterlands, I really think this guide on the best play-to-earn games to start can be of huge help to you.
What Is Splinterlands?
Splinterlands is a card game. If you’ve ever played Magic the Gathering or Heartstone, this game is exactly like both of them. What you want to do is to strategically assemble a stack of cards with different abilities and stats. And then you use these all-star cards to do battle with your opponents and earn rewards if and when you win.
Splinterlands comes with more than 283 cards that you can combine in many different ways. The more strategically you’re able to create combos, the stronger you are and the more you’ll be able to win battles.
Now, because this article is not about how to play Splinterlands, I won’t go too deeply into gameplay. But we’ve got to talk about the different currencies in this game because that’s part of how you make money in Splinterlands.
Splinterlands Currencies
There are three types of currencies in the Splinterlands ecosystem. They are called Credits, DEC, and SplinterShards or SPS.
Credits are the currency you use to buy card packs. You also spend them in the open marketplace.
As for DEC tokens, you earn those from competitive gameplay. By the way, DEC stands for something really cool. They are actually called Dark Energy Crystals. How cool is that, right?
Anyway, you can use them to buy rarer, more exclusive card packs. So, basically, DEC can buy for you what mere credits can’t. Plus, you can also use them to rent cards.
And then we have SPS tokens which are the governance token of the Splinterlands ecosystem. In Splinterlands, you earn SPS tokens for every NFT you own as well as for every DEC token you own.
Naturally, the rarer your items are, the more SPS you stand to earn.
So, what can you do with your SPS tokens? At some point in the future, they will be used by holders to exercise voting rights in Splinterlands. But the project does not have its DAO set up right now.
So, for now, you use your SPS tokens to enter special tournaments. You can also stake your tokens to earn passive income but I’ll explain all of that to you in a bit. Just keep reading.
Top Ten Ways to Make Money in Splinterlands
1. Play the Game
Playing the game is obviously the most obvious way to make money from Splinterlands. Yeah, I see what I did there but you get it.
Anyway, as a beginner, this is probably the best place to start your money-making venture in Splinterlands. The way Splinterlands is set up, you earn Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) by playing ranked matches. As I explained in a previous sub, DEC is a cryptocurrency. So, when you’ve collected enough, you can exchange it for other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Bitcoin, or stable coins like USDT.Â
Alright, so let’s talk a little bit more about how you earn DEC tokens.
As you already know, each win gets you some DEC tokens. But even more, each win increases your rank and earning power. At the beginning, the rewards would be quite small because your earning power is still a little low. However, as you play and win more games, the rewards increase because your rank and earning power are growing.
There’s actually a calculation for how you earn DEC tokens according to the level you’re at in the game. The amount of DEC you get is calculated based on your rank, league, earning rate, and any DEC bonuses your card offers. So, by playing the game and increasing your rank, you improve your chances of earning from Splinterlands.
Obviously, growth in ranks and an increase in DEC earnings aren’t that easy. It depends on certain factors, such as the strength of your deck. So you want to invest in stronger cards from the get-go so you can improve your win rate and thus your earning power.
The good thing about Splinterlands is that there’s the option of renting. So, if you can’t afford to buy just yet, you can always rent for a small fee.
2. SplinterShards (SPS) Airdrops
SplinterShards (SPS) is the new cryptocurrency governance token of the Splinterlands game. It gives the holder the ability to make decisions about the Splinterlands ecosystem through the power of voting.
But that’s not all SPS can do. You can also exchange SPS for other cryptocurrencies and make money from it.
To access SPS airdrops, you must hold in-game assets like cards, DEC, packs lands, etc. The amount of in-game assets you hold determines your earnings from the daily SPS airdrops. This is a cool way to earn passive income from your in-game assets daily.
3. Reinvest Your SplinterShards (SPS) by Staking Them
Remember that you earned your SPS just by holding in-game assets? Well, you can compound that passive income by staking your SPS for more rewards.
Staking SPS promises a reward of 56.45% APR. That’s astronomically high! It’s literally a no-brainer way to double your earnings from your passive income without breaking a sweat.
And that’s not all, you can also earn from your SPS tokens by staking them on a player in the ranked battles. Staking your SPS on a player will allow both you (the SPS holder) and the player to earn based on the player’s performance. By the way, you can also stake your SPS on yourself if you want. Or if you really want to boost your earnings, you can spread your stake across many players.
However, there is a catch to staking your SPS on a player, and it has something to do with the law of diminishing returns. Simply put, the more SPS tokens staked on a player, the lower the return per SPS token staked. So, you want to keep that in mind.
In fact, in some way, it’s kinda a bad investment strategy to stake your SPS on a high-ranking player on the leaderboard. And that’s because many people are probably staking on them, which means your returns will very likely be low.
So, it’s usually more profitable to ignore the rush for the players higher up on the leaderboards. Instead, look out for lower-ranking players with good winning potential and stake on them. You might be surprised by how much you earn.
Whatever the case, I think it’s really cool that you can stake on others to play the game and earn from their performance without even playing the game.
4. Vouchers
To earn vouchers, you need to stake your SPS tokens. Vouchers are airdropped daily, and the amount of SPS you have staked determines the number of vouchers you get.
Now, of what use are vouchers? Well, you can use them to make certain in-game purchases, even though they aren’t exactly tradeable on exchanges. In Particular, you use vouchers to buy Chaos Legion packs. Specifically, you need up to one voucher to purchase a Chaos legion in the game.
By the way, if you don’t have up to one voucher, you can keep gathering them until you have enough to buy your Chaos Legion pack. Or you can just buy some from the Hive Engine market.
Now, once you’ve been able to buy that Chaos Legion, you get to earn SPS tokens simply by holding that asset. And this is why vouchers are so important.
5. Rent Out Your Splinterlands Cards
Another way to earn passive income from Splinterlands without doing anything is by renting out your cards. You rent out your cards on the Splinterlands platform. Or you can do it on PeakMonsters.com, which has an interface with Scripperlands.com.
To be honest, I sort of prefer the PeakMonster platform because it offers some unique features. For instance, you can list or unlist as many as 1400 cards at a time. Plus, the renting process is so much faster on PeakMonster than on the Splinterlands platform. PeakMonsters also shows your earnings from the cards you rented out.
Alright, let’s talk about how renting out cards works.
You list your card for rent either on the Splinterlands platform or on PeakMonsters.com. If you get a renter, you get paid either in DEC tokens or Splinterlands credits every 24 hours, as long as your card is in use.
The minimum rental is 0.1 DEC per day.
6. Sell Your Cards on the Splinterlands Market
So far, I have shown you that you can earn money just by holding in-game assets like your cards. Well, you can also make money by selling these assets on the Splinterlands market.
To sell, you simply list your card on the marketplace and then set the price for your listing. By the way, you can only list one card on the marketplace at a time. So, you want to keep that in mind.
That said, remember that selling your cards on the Splinterlands market is like selling anywhere else. Yes, the market is large but there are no guarantees as to how quickly you sell. It might take a lot of time and it might take no time at all. So, selling might not be a quick and easy way to make money. Oftentimes, it would require a plan like a regular business.
Anyway, it goes without saying that a card listed on the marketplace cannot battle in the game. But here’s the good part, any card you own, listed or not, still counts towards your collection power. And this means that you can earn from your listed cards.
Yeah, one more thing. The Splinterlands market isn’t the only place you can list your assets for sale. I talked about PeakMonsters before, you can sell your cards there. And there’s Monster Market as well. So, you have a couple of options.
7. Take Advantage of Season Rewards
A Splinterlands season varies in length. But it typically lasts for a range of 12 – 16 days.
Now, at the end of each season, players get loot chests as their reward. These loot chests are usually of different kinds, depending on the league in which the players end the season. So, if you do great, you get a more valuable loot chest than if you just did okay. Plus, you also enter the next season at a higher rank.
And to add to the loot chest, the top finishers for the season from each of the 5 Leagues (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Champion) will also receive Booster Packs. Just like the Loot Chests, Booster packs also vary in value, depending on the position the player finishes in.
But then again, they are not always available. So, when they are not, top players get equivalent amounts of DEC instead. Right now, the rate is 1 Booster Pack to 2000 DEC.
As I already explained, each level in different leagues has its season rewards. The rewards range from 5 Loot Chests for bronze III players to 150 Loot Chests for Champion I players.
Players at the novice level, however, get nothing at the end of the season.
8. Daily Quests
Players can complete daily quests assigned to them from a random rotation of official daily quests. And for their efforts, they will earn Loot Chests commensurate to their level of play. In essence, a Gold player will earn more Loot Chests for the same daily quest than a Bronze player. Sure you get that.
The good thing about daily quests is that you don’t need to win battles back to back to complete them. Plus, daily quests offer do-overs. So, if you ever feel like you want to start over, you can. But of course, you’d lose your progress.
That said, you can increase the number of Loot Chests you earn from your daily quests. All you have to do is purchase the charges of the quest potion and you can boost your Loot Chests earnings.
9. Tournaments
Tournaments in Splinterlands are scheduled events where players battle for a prize pool. And there are different types available: Anytime tournaments, Live tournaments, Sit-and-Go tournaments, and Guild brawls. You can even customize a tournament if you want.
Usually, I recommend tournaments for experienced players because they require a high level of skill and experience. But if you want to try your hands out at tournaments as a newb, you could check out live tournaments. From there you can keep practicing until you work your way up.
10. Holding Splinterland Cards
This one is pretty straightforward. I already highlighted the advantages of holding in-game assets, such as your cards, earlier. So, basically, holding your cards qualifies you for SPS airdrops and increases the amount of DEC you gain from playing the game.
Wrapping Up
I’ve just walked you through the top ten ways to make money in Splinterlands. And as you can see, many of them do not involve playing the game.
But before I round off, I’ll give you this one bonus tip. If you really want to boost your earnings from the game to the max, your best bet is to hold your in-game assets and stake your splintershards (SPS). These give the highest earnings, even better than playing the game.
But of course, playing the game is so much fun too. So, keep your eye out for my next guide on winning strategies for Splinterlands. In the meantime, have a blast!
