Gala, the main company behind blockchain gaming platform Gala Games and later, web3 music hub Gala Music, once again surprised newsletter insiders (like me, on July 26) as it teased out Gala Film. It’s the latest decentralized platform to join the Gala Web3 ecosystem.

In the sweet newsletter issue, Gala briefly described its evolution from a gaming company to an entire universe of entertainment applications, sharing rewards and control among creatives and fans.

Previously, Gala focused on developing Gala Games. It has since then launched popular and fun titles such as Town Star. Later, it introduced Gala Music, partnering with artist Snoop Dogg to release one of the earliest and most polished adaptations of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in music.

How does Gala Film tie in with Gala Games?

Guidelines for a valid TOWER Defense Game Jam entry

As I mentioned above, you need to create your tower defense game using The Sandbox’s Game Maker software. You may include original assets that you yourself have created. Your game also needs to be playable. That means it would help if you’d add quests and missions for players to fulfill.

If you had created a The Sandbox experience before, your entry for this special TOWER x The Sandbox Game Jam needs to be different. You may get inspiration from your previous creation, but your entry into this promo needs to be unique.

To filter entries, The Sandbox x TOWER collab team also emphasized that you can’t just spam the submissions with low-quality experiences. You may even be disqualified.

Both The Sandbox’s and TOWER’s staff members will judge the entries, so make sure to please both worlds.

By the way, here are the more detailed guidelines for each entry:

• The game length needs to be at least 5 minutes. This excludes timed and collection quests.
• You need to use at least 25 different assets.
• Follow the theme. Your game should be a tower defense experience, much like the game Crazy Defense Heroes.
• Only entries created after the start date (July 25) are acceptable. If you’ve built some for previous game jams, you can’t submit them here.

The epic card you see in the above photo costs 6,618 GALA or about 523 USD. That’s already a huge amount to spend on one set of characters for a game, especially if you’re a beginner.

But for those who are used to the entry pricing of play-to-earn NFT games, that amount is totally understandable.

You see, in-game NFTs have (at least) triple significance. You could either play with them, lend them to others (called the NFT game “scholars”), or sell them on secondary markets for a profit.

If you think anything made by Gala Games is going to hit big on the market, then now’s probably a good time to purchase The Walking Dead: Empires NFTs.

An overview of Crazy Defense Heroes

Last time, we told you about how Crazy Defense Heroes (CDH) is one of those best play-to-earn NFT games anyone can start with. By anyone, we mean to include those who aren’t even familiar with non-fungible tokens.

Once you download the mobile game from Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, you can begin playing it right away.

It’s among the best in the sense that it’s fun and easy. It’s a tower-defense battle game, but it’s also strategy-based. If you’re fond of role-playing games (RPGs), then you’ll find a taste of that inside Crazy Defense Heroes, too. You have card collectibles inside, plus you can go for a multiplayer mode.

Crazy Defense Heroes: the game experience

To be fair, I’m not yet at the master level of this game, but I played enough with it to describe it to you from the inside.

CDH has an easy-to-follow game tutorial

First up, you will appreciate the welcome tutorial. It’s easy to follow and won’t overwhelm you with so many details. You could also get started with a test game right away.

The above photo shows part of the CDH game tutorial. It describes the summary of the game mechanics. You’ll have battle card options available (the red arrow on the lower left points to some of these cards). Each card represents a “defense hero” or avatar.

Your ultimate goal is to prevent attackers from reaching that blue shield (in the upper right corner in the photo above).

All over the grassy battlefield, you’ll see scattered hexagon-shaped tower bases. You can pick from any of your available cards and choose where to position your heroes among the bases.

You start off with an easy first game

Your first few games would include a simple battlefield layout and a few tower bases. The characters you see in the screenshot below are some of the defending heroes.

Among my favorite avatars are the Centurion and the Archer Tower. The Centurion is the guy who holds a sword in his right hand. You can move him around wherever he’s needed while in the battle. Meanwhile, that yellow-haired Archer girl can’t run from her tower. But, she’s very efficient when it comes to shooting arrows from a distance.

The “Call Early” button on the lower right allows you to call the attackers early on. You could just wait for them to arrive—which would be a good option if you’re in your first one or two rounds—or you could go brave and say, “come on in!”

Add your card characters in strategic locations

Anyway, you won’t be as startled by enemy attacks if you positioned your defense heroes strategically. From my experience, I would say it’s best to put a couple of Archer Towers near the entrance of the attackers, and then the rest of the Archers need to be scattered all around the battlefield.

Once your chosen heroes are in position, you could just watch the game happen. You could be proactive if you want. That is, you could follow the prompts to upgrade characters during battle, or, you could just let them do all the work. And that’s exactly why I described it as a lazy player’s game.

Succeeding rounds would be a little more “challenging”

Well, they may not be as challenging as the ones in Thetan Arena, for example, but you would notice the difference from the first few test games.

To see the whole battlefield, you need to pinch the screen inwards. You’ll be able to discover more places to build towers on. You’d also spot other enemy entrances.

Luckily, you could choose to “upgrade” your Towers while in the battle. That opportunity comes whenever you see the golden plus sign on your characters. You only need to tap on them twice to confirm the upgrade.

At some point while on the battle, you’d also see the remaining (and reserved) battle cards on the deck turn colored (from being greyed out). Tap on the one you’d want to add, and the tower bases would light up. You’d spot a few options where a hero’s presence may be needed to up the defense.

By the fourth round, you can expect the battle to go crazy. Attackers would come simultaneously from all possible enemy entrances. To make sure you’re not losing rewards points, you need to watch out for your vulnerable avatars.

In the image below, my Centurion has 50% of his life left (see upper left corner). Because he’s not on top of a tower, he’s exposed to hand-to-hand (or more appropriately, sword-to-sword) combat. He could be hit and wounded, and that’s what’s reducing his life bar.

Meanwhile, my Behemoth (the big guy beside my Centurion on the upper left corner), is quite tougher. He can withstand more hits, so he’s also a great asset on the ground.

If you come out of the battle victorious, you would level up your Avatar. And, you could unlock new levels and game functionalities, such as belonging to clans.

Anyway, I won’t spoil you with every single game detail. It would be nice for you to experience the game yourself. Before I go, though, I’ll discuss a bit about what makes Crazy Defense Heroes a play-to-earn NFT game.

The TOWER token

What’s a P2E game without a token? Crazy Defense Heroes has its own ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain. They call it the TOWER token. I personally think that’s a fitting name for a game that’s essentially a tower defense type.

Anyway, the TOWER token is the game’s medium of exchange. That means you could use it throughout the Crazy Kings franchise. Crazy Kings, by the way, is the earlier and smaller version of the expanded game CDH. Both are produced by Animoca Brands.

If you hold some TOWER tokens, you could use them both in Crazy Defense Heroes and Crazy Kings. You could earn these tokens by playing the games. Or, you could also purchase TOWER via SushiSwap and various exchanges.

Once you get some TOWER, you could also use them to purchase NFTs from the Crazy Kings franchise.

While you can easily create an account on the mobile app via your Google or Apple ID, you also need to go to crazydefenseheroes.com, log in, and connect your Ethereum wallet. That allows you to claim and use TOWER tokens.

But before anything else, let’s discuss a bit about the obvious.

Generative digital art collections are the most common NFTs

We’re used to seeing NFT collectibles, both in the form of trading cards that fandoms love and cute cartoons even kids would appreciate. Among the cartoonish, anime-like, and pixelated bunch of them, what you’re likely seeing are forms of generative art.

“Generative” means the digital artist could set up “traits” and generate multiple random art pieces from them. CryptoPunks and Bored Apes are among the most famous of these types of non-fungible token collections.

Because of their popularity and high price tag, their owners can exercise bragging rights and make the NFTs their profile pictures (PFP). Hence the term “PFP NFT” projects.

Soon, however, people were looking for more NFT utility other than just displaying them on their social profiles. Luckily, creators and investors realized that, too. And now, we have new emerging types of NFTs to get excited about.

1. In-Game NFTs

Obviously, we like NFT games here, so this category of NFTs isn’t entirely new to us. But, big mainstream game creators are interested in jumping into the blockchain.

One mainstream game company that’s into NFTs is Square Enix. The Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider creator plans to release blockchain video games.

Meanwhile, the company Ubisoft has already integrated NFTs into one of its games, Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Apparently, though, not all mainstream gamers and streamers like the idea of bringing NFTs into their favorite AAA games. This sentiment probably made some companies reluctant to introduce NFT items or characters into already-popular titles.

So, gaming industry giants like Netmarble are pitching new iterations of existing games instead of launching entirely new ones. Netmarble’s very first play-to-earn crypto game is A3: Still Alive, and it has in-game NFT items at its core.

However, Ubisoft later announced that it’ll stop creating new content and NFTs for Ghost Recon, but told followers about future drops on other games. Meanwhile, Square Enix isn’t turning back from its plans, as it sells Tomb Raider and other titles to fund its blockchain gaming projects.

In principle, players could use in-game NFTs in the game itself, but they could also own these items for real. If they want, they could sell the items because they’re NFTs.

It’ll be interesting to observe how all other big mainstream players will adapt NFT gaming in the years to come.

2. Music NFTs

Gala Games launched Gala Music in February 2022 and sparked interest in music NFTs. Among the first artists to sell their music as NFTs on Gala Music are Snoop Dogg and BT.

By creating music as NFTs, singers and composers can earn more from their creations than from traditional record labels. Gala Music presents that opportunity for them as well as their biggest stans who would love to support their favorites better.

Aside from Gala Music, artists and music lovers can explore Catalog. It catalogs single-edition music NFTs. The platform allows you to create, buy, sell, or trade audio NFTs.

Although OpenSea has a dedicated music NFT category, some artists prefer launching their song NFTs into music-specific platforms.

3. Sneaker NFTs

We’re not talking about the typical collection of sneaker art NFTs here. Instead, we’re looking at NFT sneakers that would represent your dedication to outdoor fitness and your earning potential precisely because of that dedication.

You see, Play-to-Earn emerged with NFT games, while Listen-to-Earn will be a thing because of Gala Music and song NFTs. Both already sound very great and far ahead of PFP NFTs, which only get you to brag.

But what could be more exciting for runners and health-conscious humans than a Move-to-Earn concept? Blockchain and Web3 app developers certainly didn’t want to miss out on that, so they created projects like STEPN.

Currently, STEPN’s NFT sneakers are already being sold and traded on Binance. With such a sneaker NFT, you could walk or jog outdoors and earn tokens.

4. Fashion NFTs

Sneakers are part of modern fashion, yes. But fashion NFTs would be a separate category if we’re talking about big brands such as Gucci.

The fashion company has a dedicated Vault for its metaverse and NFT enterprise. It also has an NFT collection at OpenSea called SuperGucci and a digital destination called Gucci Town on Roblox.

Interestingly, it’s not just Gucci. A swarm of fashion artists and companies have even graced the first-ever Metaverse Fashion Week, which was powered by UNXD and Vogue.

NFT dresses and other digital fashion pieces are becoming increasingly popular in Decentraland, and most big brands have loved to be on board.

5. Literary NFTs

Web3 has taken care of visual artists, gamers, music creators, and even fashionistas. But what about the wordsmiths?

Luckily, writers now have an opportunity to publish their work as literary NFTs—thanks to this new community and platform called NiftyLit. This magazine platform believes the future of publishing is in Web3. 

Another platform for crypto writers is Creatokia. It welcomes content from existing publishers and authors, but it’s also working on its own collection: Creatokia Originals.

There’s one more type of NFT that’ll likely stick around

They’re meme NFTs. The thing with them is they likely won’t sell as much unless they become absolutely popular. If their meme goes viral, then the likelihood of getting millions out of selling it as an NFT could be higher.

Netmarble Metaverse starts off with a solid reputation

The company has already made a name for itself, having created mobile games that gained global fans for years.

Netmarble, the Korean gaming company founded in 2000 by Bang Jun-hyuk, has been known for developing Lineage 2 Revolution (L2R). L2R easily became one of the highest-grossing mobile games in the market.

Other games Netmarble is famous for include Seven Knights, Everybody’s Marble, and Raven (Evilbane in the US).

My personal favorite is Netmarble’s Marvel: Future Fight, being a Marvel fan myself.

Meanwhile, K-pop fans worldwide have gushed over BTS World, the game Netmarble developed in partnership with the internationally renowned group BTS.

A3: Still Alive will be the first NFT game in Netmarble Universe

Bang made the exciting announcement that Netmarble is preparing to launch 20 new games. About 70% or around 14 of these upcoming releases will use blockchain technology.

Among these new creations, A3: Still Alive will be Netmarble’s first play-to-earn NFT game. Everyone is expecting the release of its blockchain-based features in March 2022.

A3: Still Alive and its blockchain-linked update is now open for pre-registration. As of this writing, the game’s main landing page is already showing the iOS and Google Play download links.

The game was first launched in November 2020 and has gone through several updates. This year, in the wake of Metaverse and blockchain games, A3 is adding a new Inetrion Dungeon update.

If you pre-register soon, you’ll receive rewards such as in-game items.

Mint a new coin, INETRIUM, and use it in the real world

True to its promise of “breaking the barrier between game and reality,” A3: Still Alive will feature crypto coin minting.

Players can enter the “Inetrion Dungeon” and kill Inetrion monsters to acquire an Inetrion Ore. You can then go to the Refinery to refine the ore, and therefore mint a new coin called “INETRIUM” or ITU for short.

ITU is A3’s first global blockchain-based coin. Soon, you’ll be able to exchange INETRIUM for external cryptocurrencies.

The primary premise of the game is you have to “stay alive,” so you could actually collect Inetrion Ores and convert them into the coin INETRIUM.

If you change your mind, you could also convert INETRIUM back into Inetrion Ore and use it to power yourself up in the game.

Netmarble Metaverse and NFT games to target gamers worldwide

Gaming industry regulators in South Korea have banned play-to-earn games for fear of fueling addiction and gambling among their youth.

Thus, Netmarble will focus on developing its NFT games for a more global audience. After all, from 2020 alone, it looks like only about 33% of its gamers are from South Korea. North American gamers also compose about the same chunk, while European fans comprise about 12%.

The rest are from Japan (8%), Southeast Asia (10%), and other countries (4%).

In 2021, 74% of Netmarble’s sales came from its global audience. This number might rise to above 80% in 2022.

Netmarble is expanding itself fully into the blockchain business

Netmarble is indeed advancing into the blockchain industry. Bang announced in an official Netmarble event that the company will develop itself into a full-fledged blockchain business.

Among the other NFT games Netmarble is working on is Everybody’s Marble: Metaworld. This game will use blockchain technologies to allow players to purchase land in a virtual, metaworld. Game players will be able to build a real-estate-based metaverse platform.

Moreover, Netmarble plans to combine blockchain not only with games, but also with webtoons, web novels, and commerce.

Another interesting plan is for Netmarble to introduce metahuman virtual female idols, some of which have been named Lina, Hena, and Siu. They could appear as in-game characters and perform as virtual actors and singers.

GameStop and Loopring is still happening, apparently

So was that thing about Loopring and GameStop exchanging vows a mere hype?

When almost everyone on the planet anticipated the partnership, the handshake of building the GameStop NFT marketplace with Immutable X was quite a shocker.

To make that a little bit digestible, picture this. Loopring is like PayPal, while Immutable is like eBay. At least that’s how some people would view it.

You could be any of the following to apply:

• venture-backed private company
• private company
• DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization)

If you’re not any of those, you could also fall under the “other business/organization” classification.

Moreover, the grant application form is asking if you’re a:

• game developer
• game studio
• Web3 developer
• Metaverse developer
• brand
• service provider

You also need to share your company or project name, website, name, and email address.

Finally, and perhaps the most important part, is for you to describe the nature of your partnership proposal.

If you could showcase what makes your project so interesting, that could give you a better fighting chance for the grant. It’d be best if you could describe your progress. Also, provide some prototypes or whitepapers, and any achievement your project has already gained.

What’s next for GameStop NFT marketplace with Immutable X?

Immutable X will provide GameStop’s “upcoming NFT marketplace w/ security, speed, 100% carbon neutrality & zero gas fee.”

Both companies are still building out the details while supporting interesting NFT game projects.

This plant has a symbiotic relationship with a particular soil bacteria. If you leave its roots in the ground, these roots will provide a nitrogen source for its neighbor.

Polygon is a Layer 2 chain that runs alongside the Ethereum blockchain. It processes transactions faster, and it’s more eco-friendly.

That means each “publication” of content on the Lens Protocol will have a low carbon footprint.

The Lens Protocol may shape the future of social media.

After all, they’re already claiming it.
