Gala, the main company behind blockchain gaming platform Gala Games and later, web3 music hub Gala Music, once again surprised newsletter insiders (like me, on July 26) as it teased out Gala Film. It’s the latest decentralized platform to join the Gala Web3 ecosystem.

In the sweet newsletter issue, Gala briefly described its evolution from a gaming company to an entire universe of entertainment applications, sharing rewards and control among creatives and fans.

Previously, Gala focused on developing Gala Games. It has since then launched popular and fun titles such as Town Star. Later, it introduced Gala Music, partnering with artist Snoop Dogg to release one of the earliest and most polished adaptations of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in music.

Gala Film: The Next Frontier of Gala

Gala’s vision for Gala Film involves the same principles it embraced with Gala Games and Gala Music. It’s all about empowering creators and making sure they own and get rewarded for the content they produce.

Having popularized the role of “nodes” in the decentralized Web3, Gala is bringing the concept of “shared ownership and rewards” to movie-making. This means everyone can rightfully own their entertainment content, and at the same time, support their favorite film creators worldwide.

Into the Galaverse

This adventure short film celebrates Web3 experiences as imagined by Gala. It will feature IRL (in real life) experiences in the metaverse.

How does Gala Film tie in with Gala Games?

Since this creative video and storytelling platform is powered by Gala, you can expect that whatever $GALA tokens you’re holding now will have more use cases for web3 entertainment.

Guidelines for a valid TOWER Defense Game Jam entry

As I mentioned above, you need to create your tower defense game using The Sandbox’s Game Maker software. You may include original assets that you yourself have created. Your game also needs to be playable. That means it would help if you’d add quests and missions for players to fulfill.

If you had created a The Sandbox experience before, your entry for this special TOWER x The Sandbox Game Jam needs to be different. You may get inspiration from your previous creation, but your entry into this promo needs to be unique.

To filter entries, The Sandbox x TOWER collab team also emphasized that you can’t just spam the submissions with low-quality experiences. You may even be disqualified.

Both The Sandbox’s and TOWER’s staff members will judge the entries, so make sure to please both worlds.

By the way, here are the more detailed guidelines for each entry:

• The game length needs to be at least 5 minutes. This excludes timed and collection quests.
• You need to use at least 25 different assets.
• Follow the theme. Your game should be a tower defense experience, much like the game Crazy Defense Heroes.
• Only entries created after the start date (July 25) are acceptable. If you’ve built some for previous game jams, you can’t submit them here.

Ubisoft was bold, but fans didn’t like it

Ubisoft was the first to incorporate NFTs in one of its games, Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Sadly, the company had to stop improving the game after 11 updates since the game’s 2019 launch. Quartz Digits, the game’s NFTs, saw its final release in March this year.

While Ubisoft was bold enough to make the first NFT move, its existing gamers didn’t seem to like it. Ghost Recon Breakpoint, for instance, only had a very limited player base. So, it didn’t make sense, financially speaking, for the company to continue supporting the game.

Still, Ubisoft is willing to add NFTs to its future games. It insists that “gamers don’t get what a digital secondary market can bring to them.” Apparently, the Ubisoft leadership is hopeful for an eventual wider adaptation for NFTs in traditional AAA games.

EA Games are having second thoughts  

EA CEO Andrew Wilson has once expressed his interest in “collectible digital content,” saying it could play a meaningful part in the company’s future. But, over the course of 2022’s second half, he seems to have been reevaluating things.

Wilson says the NFTs and the blockchain, as applied in games, are not something they’re focused on. For now, they just want to give players the best experience possible. And, if players don’t like having NFTs in games, then EA will rather have nothing to do with them, too.

Nintendo is interested but confused

Reportedly, Nintendo has some interest in the metaverse and non-fungible tokens. But, like EA, it wants to prioritize players.  In particular, Nintendo isn’t sure about what kinds of “joy” the NFTs could bring to its players.

Nintendo wants to continue to be a company that proposes entertainment, and if they’re still confused about how to deliver that through NFTs, then they’ll likely not make the move.

Square Enix is finally making Final Fantasy NFTs

Previously, Square Enix has only been toying with the idea of non-fungible tokens in its games. Fans have been concerned, that’s why the game company has to put off pushing NFTs. 

Luckily for blockchain and NFT believers, Square Enix is partnering with the blockchain company Enjin to create a digital card collection. These NFT cards will serve to celebrate Final Fantasy VII’s 25th anniversary. 

There’s also a physical action figure to accompany Enjin’s NFT digital certificate of authenticity and the digital version of the figure. By the way, you can pre-order this action figure here.

Why are big game companies hesitant about NFTs?

For those who aren’t fangirling over non-fungible tokens and play-to-earn games, NFTs are just another way for game companies to make money out of players. But, those who see the potential and want to take advantage of GameFi are willing to take chances.

Big game companies, especially those with millions of fans, would understandably want to take careful steps, or else they could lose a huge chunk of their player base.

If you find it a little disappointing that game companies seem to be slow adaptors of NFTs in games, you don’t have to waste your energy on hoping they would.

What you can do is try to explore emerging blockchain-focused game companies, such as Gala Games. With such companies, you’re sure to see the fun and the play-to-earn potential coming together.

What’s so interesting about KraBots?

The “Kra” in KraBots most likely derives itself from “crafting.” In essence, the game allows you to collect a lot of non-fungible token (NFT) parts and then combine them to make your virtual robots. Polium claims this console will be able to run games from different blockchains. It’s said to be powerful enough such that it can run high-performance games, but will also be easy to use even for traditional players.

By “traditional,” we mean those who don’t understand Web3 or blockchain games.

The company is planning to release the console in Q3 2024. Only those players who buy a Polium Pass will be able to make pre-orders. The Polium Pass is a non-fungible token (NFT) on the Ethereum network. There will be 10,000 of these passes.

Polium One will include a fingerprint scanner

To give added security, Polium One will include a fingerprint scanner plus a “wallet” button. These features should be able to give the user quick access to the multi-chain wallet in the console. Plus, the wallet will enable “trading, swapping, staking, and receiving cryptocurrency.”

Interestingly, Polium has admitted that only four people are working on this console’s hardware. But, it has also claimed that it will feature 8K HDR at 120 fps, plus ray tracing.

Skeptics have expressed their concerns

Unfortunately, some have not received the announcement well. Among these are players who do not yet believe in blockchain gaming.

In Polium’s Discord server, some users have expressed that “this entire project” was a scam. Polium responded as follows:

“We have been receiving FUD and criticism regarding our ability to execute. To clarify, it’s four of us that are building the functional prototype for the console and controller.

“We have experience in hardware and software development. We are currently doing the power tree for the console’s board. We should have a functional prototype by November or before.

“We will show the prototype live on YouTube or have a well-trusted influencer show you all. The prototype will prove that the console can run games that are on different blockchains and built with different programming languages.

“We will not take any pre-orders/funding until we show the prototype and if the community is interested. Once we have a functional prototype, we will build the console for manufacturing.”

By the way, ‘FUD’ is an acronym meaning ‘fear, uncertainty, and doubt.’ And many gamers seem to see the Polium One project with much FUD.

Reward Pools for July and August

There will be three reward tiers for July and August 2022. Tier 1 requires 315,000–450,000 XP. If you get this much XP, you will get your share of the 900,000 TOWER token reward pool.

Meanwhile, Tier 2 requires 450,000–600,000 XP. Players reaching these numbers will enjoy a prize pool of 600,000 TOWER. The TOWER tokens are much less, but that’s because there will be fewer players who’ll get to the second tier. It’ll be much more challenging to get to Tier 2.

Finally, players who get 600,001 XP and up will share 300,000 TOWER. Plus, each one who will get to the top 10% of players will have one Elite Badge NFT.

Crazy Defense Heroes Avatar Levels and XPs

What does 315,000 XP look like?

Every time you win a battle in Crazy Defense Heroes (CDH), you will need to gain experience points (XP). Certain XPs are required for you to progress from one avatar level to the next.

Hint: If you don’t plan on buying extra lives or gems or maps, and all you want is to play for free, then you can get one avatar level higher per day. At least that’s been my experience so far.

Suppose you started at Avatar Level 20 in July 2022. That’s equivalent to 250,000 XP. To gain 315,000 XP more—that is, to qualify for Tier 1 of TOWER rewards—you’ll need to have 250,000 + 315,000 XP = 565,000 XP in total. And that’s equivalent to Avatar Level 29.

And, given the hint I gave you a while ago, Avatar Level 29 looks like it’s doable in just 9 days.

That means you can aspire for more. You can gain more than 450,000 avatar XP within the month. If you do that, you can earn your share of both Tier 1 and Tier 2 Reward Pools. 

What’s crazy (in a very good way) is that you can earn TOWER from all the 3 Tiers if you gain more than 600,000 avatar XP!

If you want to be geeky, you can see this table some Crazy Defense Heroes fans have made to learn how much XP you’ll have to gain to reach certain avatar levels and vice versa. There’s even a calculator!

What is Crazy Defense Heroes?

Crazy Defense Heroes is a tower defense and card strategy game. It’s free to play on iOS and Android but it also has play-to-earn mechanics, which I’ve just described roughly above. That is, if you earn TOWER from this game, you can exchange it for other crypto or even real-world fiat currency.

Produced by Animoca Brands, Crazy Defense Heroes is promising when it comes to giving players earning potential and game satisfaction. Initially, I thought it was just a game for lazy players. But, it turns out it can be pretty challenging as you reach higher avatar levels and you won’t opt for the auto-play.

How to play and earn from Lost Relics 

Right now, Lost Relics does not have any tradable token. You will have to scour through the dungeon to find non-fungible token (NFT) items, which you can then sell in the marketplace.

For example, if you found a mythical inferno blade, you can possibly trade that for $600. Note, however, that rare NFTs are scarce. Consider it a bonus of playing a fun ARPG.

Another way to earn from this game is to find Shadowstones in a dungeon. A hundred of these Shadowstones would be equivalent to 1 ENJ (the Enjin coin), which you can then trade for other cryptocurrencies.

What’s in the Gala Games Town Crush Challenge?

The Town Crush Challenge: June (July) Mayhem and its rewards are open to Gala Gold members. If you’re one of them, you can crush your way to your share of $400k rewards. This GALA reward pool will grow by $50 each time an Egg Storage building is sold.

If you’re joining the challenge, you have until July 8, 12 pm PT to complete all 12 levels of Town Crush. 

Upgrade to a Gala Gold status

To be eligible to share in the rewards of the Town Crush challenge, you need to be a Gala Gold member of Gala Games. 

Can you play Town Crush even if you’re not yet a Gala Gold member?

Good question. Interestingly, the answer is yes. You can do your best to crush all 12 levels and then upgrade right away to Gala Gold membership before the challenge ends.

That is, if you succeed before July 8, you can then decide to upgrade and pay $50 for a lifetime membership, since you’ll reap a share of GALA rewards anyway. By the way, as of this writing, 50 USD is about 956 GALA, as you can see below.

Exciting ways to win in the Town Crush Challenge

To get more lives (hearts) and play some more after failing, you might want to purchase some Bag o’ Stars from the Gala Games store. By the way, you need to use the TOWN token.

You can then buy a lot of lives using your Bag o’ Stars and proceed to win all Town Crush levels.

Or, if you want, you can purchase an Egg Storage building for Town Star, and then use it to store 40 Eggs. If you own an Egg Storage, you’ll get two extra Eggsecutioners per Town Crush round. Again, you can only use TOWN to buy an Egg Storage.

What is Town Crush?

In a way, you could describe Town Crush as the blockchain game version of Candy Crush. Gala Games launched Town Crush in April 2022, hoping to test their new blockchain, the Gala Chain.
