There have been many NFT game releases this year, and some of them are already successful with their beta tests. The top dogs, such as Decentraland and Illuvium, are coming soon in the market. Most of them, however, are not free-to-play NFT games. If you’re looking forward to some free-to-play or play-to-earn (or both!) NFT games with the potential for AAA quality, here are four of the most hyped ones that are launching soon.
Age of Rust
We’re starting with a game that has gained a lot of attention for its AAA graphics and detailed storyline. Age of Rust is a single-player dark sci-fi action-adventure game set in the vast expanse of the universe. Here, you’ll explore mysterious caverns, abandoned space stations, and ruins on faraway worlds. It features stunning destinations, detailed puzzles, an exciting storyline, and in-game treasure hunts for blockchain assets and currency.Â
The game is still in beta testing and is available as a free playtest version on Steam. However, you will need an Enjin (ENJ) wallet and an Age of Rust token to play the beta. The full version is set to release on Steam sometime this year.Â
Gameplay
In Age of Rust, you’ll be playing the role of Quinn 7, a well-known cyber hacker that was stored away in cryofreeze in the 22nd century. You are being brought back to the universe where AI has taken over, and your skills are needed to save humanity. This is where your puzzle-solving skills come into play.
What makes the game so much fun to play is the backstory behind the game. In this world, humans created AI robots to do various tasks like duties aboard colony ships, military enforcement, and environmental cleanup. These things had made life easier for humanity but changed due to an apocalyptic event. Robots turned into brutal killing machines intent on enslaving the human race.
You’ll be tossed into complex puzzles right at the start of the game. You will have to work through them to progress in the storyline and collect your bounties. On top of that, not only are you going to solve puzzles, but you also need to fight your way through the bounty hunters who want to capture you for your hacking skills.
For the entire game duration, you have a voice in your ear—that from a woman named Arjen Callisto. She is the person who woke you up and is guiding you through your journey. You don’t know if you can trust her or not, but you have no choice but to follow her instructions. Otherwise, you’ll be stranded on a foreign planet.
Moving forward
As you progress, you will find tons of crypto bounties that are available on Age of Rust. The treasures you can obtain in the game are worth Enjin prices. Some of these are backed by up to 1000 to 20,000 Enjin tokens. There’s also a 4 BTC bounty and a finale of 20 BTC money for you to grab if you’re into bitcoin as well.
The open beta test for season 1 of this game is available on Steam right now. In this season, multiple bounties are split into three different tiers. In order to start the tier 1 bounties, you will need some Rustbits, the in-game currency. You can either find these by finding hidden areas or completing puzzles. They’re also purchasable in the Enjin marketplace in the form of NFTs. As for the tier 2 and 3 bounties, you will be needing some mission cards to go on.
Of course, you will receive the smallest awards in tier-1. These are Rustbits, mission tokens, and multiverse NFTs. The Tier 2 bounty rewards include all these three as well, with the addition of trophy tokens. Once you complete the tier 3 bounties, you can win the large bitcoin rewards. It’s important to note that there is a time limit on some of these bounties, so they may only be limited to the first players that sold them. That’s why you have to ensure that you’re not sleeping on Age of Rust once it’s released.
Infinite Fleet
Infinite Fleet is a space-themed massively multiplayer online real-time strategy (MMORTS) game set in a procedurally-generated universe. It is listed as one of the free-to-play NFT games with AAA-quality graphics. Like Age of Rust, Infinite Fleet also uses Bitcoin, particularly the Liquid Network sidechain—a secondary layer of the BTC. The in-game currency for buying virtual assets will be the game’s native token, Infinite (INF). Both tokens and NFTs of space ships are issued in the Liquid network.
You can distinguish the NFT ships with their marks, while non-NFT ships have none of those marks. Unmarked ships can be used by non-paying players, which makes this game free to play. Take note that INF tokens are not sold, and the only way to earn them is by playing the game. The Infinite fleet team disclosed many fascinating features about the game, which are more likely to happen in future game releases.
Gameplay
In this epic sci-fi MMO strategy game, you will fight under the banner of the United Sol Federation (USF) to defend humanity against alien invaders. You will play the role of the fleet commander in control of large spaceships, reinforced by smaller AI-controlled fighters. Besides completing missions and earning rewards, you can also explore and colonize planets, craft items, participate in PvP or DvD battles, and build spaceships that can transform into robots.
Infinite Fleet has no fixed release date yet but is expected to be available on the PC, with plans for cross-platform play. As of now, you can go ahead and check out the stunning trailer of the game to get familiar with the graphics and gameplay.
Thetan Arena
Another free-to-play and play-to-earn game is Thetan Arena. This game is one of the most anticipated free-to-play NFT games as of writing. Thetan Arena was developed by KardiaChain, the developer of My Defi Pet which gained massive success in just 4 months upon its release, alongside the famous Vietnamese game developer WolfFun Games. In fact, it was modeled after one of WolfFun’s well-established games, Hero Strike, which now has over ten million downloads.
Speaking of “downloads,” the game has already started beta testing and is available on Android and iOS. In just four days upon its open beta release, the downloads for this game reached 10,000 on IOS and 101,000 on Android. It’s also available now on PC.
The game is built on the Binance Smart Chain network. Its in-game economy is based on Thetan Gem tokens ($THG), which you can convert into fiat money or use to open Thetan Boxes. These Thetan Boxes allow you to summon new Premium Heroes in the game.
Gameplay
As soon as you join in the beta test, you will receive tokens that you can use to buy or sell heroes and Thetan boxes. It’s meant for you to fully immerse yourself in the game as a player and appreciate the game’s ecosystem.
For the game setting, Thetan Arena features a retro-minimalistic 2D design with a top-down view. You can easily navigate within the environment with its simple controls, smooth graphics, and a bunch of fun game modes like Team Deathmatch, Tower Defense, and Battle Royale.
While players take down enemies in the Team Defense mode, 4 heroes or players will be in an arena battling with each other in the Team Deathmatch mode. As for the Battle Royale mode, the will be 42 solos or 21 duos where only the last player/team standing can participate.
The full launch of this game is expected to be by the end of 2021. We’ll keep you updated about it, so stay tuned with us.
SkyWeaver
If Player-versus-Player (PvP) trading card games is your thing, you might enjoy this next game that will definitely up your gaming experience—SkyWeaver. It’s currently among the most highly-anticipated free-to-play NFT games. If you’ve never heard of it yet, it’s essentially another card battle game with similar gameplay to that of God’s Unchained. It runs on the Ethereum-based blockchain Polygon.
Gameplay
SkyWeaver follows the basic mechanics of the standard TCGs where you simply summon cards into the playing field to fight other players, and the first one to drain the opponent’s life becomes the victor.
The base cards you will obtain as soon as you enter are not NFTs. They’re tied to your account and are not tradable. The cards you will earn further—the Silver and Gold cards—however, are NFTs. You can win the Silver cards in Ranked matches, and tournaments called Conquest, whereas the Gold cards can only be won in Conquest.
Furthermore, this game is a singleton-based card game, which means you can only have up to one copy of each card per deck. The cards are split up into various prisms. Each of these prisms has its own mix of goons and magics, and you may build a 20-card deck using only 1 prism or a 30 card deck with two prisms.
There are currently 5 prisms in the game you can choose from:
- Strength (STR)
- Wisdom (WIS)
- Agility (AGI)
- Heart (HRT)
- Intellect (INT)
Elements assigned to each card also play a role in the gameplay, albeit minor. They don’t have a per-type match-up bonus like in Pokemon, but they play a role in how the decks are thrown and played out. These elements are Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Dark, Light, Metal, Mind.
Plans for the game
The team behind SkyWeaver aims to develop and foster a player-owned economy where players decide the value of the cards. However, there are no booster packs for sale to up the quality of your cards.
SkyWeaver will be playable on PC, mobile, and most modern web browsers. It’s both free to play and play to earn, so you don’t need to purchase anything to start a battle. The game has been in private beta testing for a while now and will begin its soft launch on November 25th to prepare for open beta. but you can try to get into it by joining the waitlist.
