Why GameStop chose Immutable X

Apart from any sort of controversy, GameStop has chosen to partner with Immutable for at least five good reasons.

1. Zero gas fees. Immutable offers zero gas fees for trading and minting NFTs. That equates to a smoother, frictionless, and more newbie-attractive NFT experience. This feature will be key to long-term gamers who, at the same time, still find themselves noobs in the NFT space.
2. Smooth asset trading. Having a global order book is Immutable’s solid advantage. For example, assets you’d list on a website can be purchased in-game. If GameStop uses Immutable X’s technology, it would be so much easier to trade assets across several games.
3. Getting gamers fascinated. Gods Unchained is a strong element of Immutable’s portfolio. Immutable’s selling point in the matter is simple but useful: prioritizing a good gaming experience. And that’s something GameStop has considered pretty valuable.
4. Drawing more developers. Attracting devs is quite natural to Immutable, given its preference to using REST API’s to mint NFTs instead of using solidity. Devs will clap their hands for the more user-friendly APIs. Again, this will then be a solid anchor for GameStop if they’re dreaming of scaling.
5. High PR. Immutable is already quite credible with partners such as TikTok and OpenSea.

Moreover, we’d like to recall Immutable’s USP (unique selling proposition) in the NFT and blockchain industry. Immutable X boasts itself as the very first L2 (Layer 2) for NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. 

GameStop and Loopring is still happening, apparently

So was that thing about Loopring and GameStop exchanging vows a mere hype?

When almost everyone on the planet anticipated the partnership, the handshake of building the GameStop NFT marketplace with Immutable X was quite a shocker.

What most people didn’t know about is this 8-K revelation, with a very interesting section on page 22:

Loopring vs Immutable X

Both Loopring and Immutable X offer Layer 2 scaling. Loopring, however, is mainly offering an L2 wallet for tokens and NFTs, while Immutable provides an NFT marketplace.

To make that a little bit digestible, picture this. Loopring is like PayPal, while Immutable is like eBay. At least that’s how some people would view it.

Anyway, to keep both Loopring’s and Immutable’s fans hopeful, it looks like they’re both going to work with GameStop. I mean, Immutable X may take care of NFTs for GameStop, sure. And yet, Loopring would still be there, soon. And it will be for everything else in GameStop’s blockchain adventure, whatever “everything else” might mean.

It’s like their very first gift together.

Yes, the GameStop and Immutable X partnership is said to bring back the power to players, creators, and collectors. It’s their way to make a change in the gaming industry.

The funding is open to “game changers”

A whopping $100M grant program awaits the qualified applicants. If you’re keen about building your own Web3 gaming, I suppose this must ignite your interest.

You could be any of the following to apply:

• public company
• venture-backed private company
• private company
• DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization)

If you’re not any of those, you could also fall under the “other business/organization” classification.

Moreover, the grant application form is asking if you’re a:

• game developer
• game studio
• Web3 developer
• Metaverse developer
• brand
• service provider

You also need to share your company or project name, website, name, and email address.

Finally, and perhaps the most important part, is for you to describe the nature of your partnership proposal.

If you could showcase what makes your project so interesting, that could give you a better fighting chance for the grant. It’d be best if you could describe your progress. Also, provide some prototypes or whitepapers, and any achievement your project has already gained.

What’s next for GameStop NFT marketplace with Immutable X?

Writers First Came Up With the Idea of a Metaverse

The metaverse in itself is not a novel idea. In fact, Neal Stephenson in his 1992 science fiction novel “Snow Crash”, which envisioned a virtual reality based successor to the internet, coined the name metaverse. 

In Snow Crash, people explored an online world using digital avatars of themselves, often as a way to escape a dystopian reality. 

More recently, Ernest Cline in his 2011 novel “Ready Player One”, which was later adapted into a movie for the big screen, further popularized the idea of a metaverse. 

Ready Player One pictured a futuristic world in 2045 that was gripped by global warming and an energy crisis. This led to a widespread socio-economic catastrophe which people could only escape by transporting themselves into a fantasy virtual world called OASIS.

In a way, the scenario painted by Cline in his novel is very similar to the idea of a metaverse described to us by Mark Zuckerberg. For one, the people in Ready Player One accessed Oasis through virtual reality headsets and wired gloves. The only difference is that in Zuckerberg’s reality, the metaverse is the protagonist.

The Evolution of the Metaverse: From Fiction to Reality

It’s been about three decades since Neil Stephenson envisioned the metaverse and a lot has happened since then. But let’s begin with the one event that made the metaverse go viral: Facebook’s entry into the metaverse.

Mark Zuckerberg changed the name of his company from Facebook to Meta on October 28, 2021. According to Zuckerberg, the move shows the company’s new focus on building the metaverse. This, he estimates, could take about five to ten years before the main features of the metaverse become mainstream. 

It would appear that this announcement by Zuckerberg was the push the idea of the metaverse needed. Since then, it has received a lot of attention. In fact, the term “metaverse” has become something of a buzzword. But not many are excited by Facebook’s plans for the metaverse, with some referring to it as a techno-dystopian nightmare.

That’s not our focus in today’s article, though. Besides, no one company will ever own the metaverse. The metaverse, just like the internet, is going to be the result of the work of many contributors.

I like the way Jon Lai, a GP at investment firm a16z puts it. He says,

“There’s a lot of building yet to be done. The blockchain, play-to-earn, different types of jobs, virtual economics, all of that are like stepping stones as well as UGC platforms and scaling content creation… It won’t be this shining product launch from some company who just says, ‘Hey! We’ve been working on this for ten years and boom, here’s the metaverse.’ It’s going to be different companies working in completely different spaces on completely different products.” Already, companies like Roblox, Microsoft, and Epic Games are also planning their own metaverses. Nvidia, Square, and even Alibaba have also officially announced their move to the metaverse.

But What Exactly Is the Metaverse?

The metaverse is a virtual space where users can interact and perform real-life activities with other people. It is an aggregation of 3D virtual realms that are focused on social connections. 

The metaverse combines multiple elements of technology, including virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and 3D video. 

Some other technologies that will aid the development of the metaverse are also already in place. These include ultra-fast broadband speeds, virtual reality headsets, and always-on online worlds. Not all of these technologies are readily accessible right now. However, they are already in place, each playing its role in the evolution of the metaverse.

Qualities of the Metaverse

The venture capitalist Mathew Ball defines the metaverse with seven qualities. He believes the metaverse will:

1. Be Persistent

This means that the metaverse will never reset, pause, or end. It will run indefinitely.

2. Be Synchronous and Live

Events in the metaverse will be prescheduled and self-contained, just like in real life. But it will still be a living experience that exists consistently for everyone and in real-time.

3. Be Without Any Cap to Concurrent Users

The metaverse will be without any cap to users while also providing each user with an individual sense of “presence.” That is, everyone will be able to partake in specific events, places, or activities together, at the same time, and with individual agency.

4. Be a Fully Functioning Economy

Individuals and businesses in the metaverse will be able to create, own, invest, sell, and be rewarded for an incredibly wide range of work that produces value, recognizable by others.

5. Span a Variety of Worlds

The metaverse will be an experience that spans both the digital and physical worlds, private and public networks/experiences, and open and closed platforms. 

6. Offer Unprecedented Interoperability of Data

And not just data, the metaverse will also come with interoperability of digital items/assets, content, and so on. 

Assets, items, and content obtained from a platform on the metaverse can be used across other platforms. And each of these platforms in the metaverse would only require one password to access.

7. Offer A Diverse Range of User-Generated Content

The metaverse will be populated by content and experiences created and operated by an incredibly wide range of contributors. Content will not just come from independent individuals. It will also come from informally organized groups as well as commercially-focused enterprises.

The Metaverse Gold Rush

The metaverse is at a stage of heavy development, and big tech companies have joined the gold rush to build this virtual world and the infrastructure it needs to function. These companies already own platforms that they believe will function in the metaverse. And this has fostered a vested interest on the part of these companies to build metaverse solutions.

Proponents of the metaverse believe that users will work, play, and socialize with friends in certain activities like concerts, conferences, and virtual trips.

Speaking of, on November 19 2021, the famous American musician, Justin Bieber, held a 30-minute virtual concert on the virtual music platform, Wave. His avatar sang his latest album, “Justice” to an audience of about 10.7 million participating virtually.

The Metaverse Is Disrupting Our Lives Already

The metaverse clearly is not a topic to be cast aside because of the impact it will have on various aspects of our lives. In fact, it is already disrupting life as we know it today.

The Future of Work

Let’s take a look at the way we work, for example. The Covid-19 pandemic forced companies to look towards remote collaborations for work, which led to the rise of platforms like Zoom and Slack. 

Now, although we are slowly returning to life before the pandemic, from the look of things, remote work is here to stay. The virtual solutions making remote work possible have opened up opportunities for collaboration that are not hindered by location and time. A success that the metaverse will build on and make even more efficient and convenient for both employers and employees. 

The future of work may look like sitting in the comfort of your house, strapping on a VR headset or an AR device, and carrying out activities from 9 to 5. With our lives increasingly becoming online, transitioning into this should not be long from now or difficult.

Ecommerce

E-commerce will also be transformed hugely by the metaverse. The pandemic was a blessing in disguise for the e-commerce industry. Companies developed online shopping and delivery in order to stay afloat and meet the demands of their customers. 

This is certainly not going away with the coming of the metaverse. Instead, it’s going to be greatly enhanced. So, in the metaverse, instead of scrolling through a web page or visiting a physical store, consumers will explore the stores from the comfort of their homes with all the in-store experiences akin to visiting the physical store. 

Consumers will also have an interactive in-store experience, try out products, and get clarification on products that will aid the purchasing process.

Social Networking

It’s obvious that the future of social networks is the metaverse, and it might make screens obsolete for social connections. 

The metaverse social media experience will be different, though. It may look like a walk through an open space, a park, or a street. And instead of typing comments on pages, social interaction will evolve to friends engaging in real-time communication on various social media platforms.

Money

Every platform that hosts human interaction needs to provide a channel for transactions among members because transactions are part of socialization. There will be transactions between users in the metaverse as there already is on the internet today. This interaction will cast a new shade to money as we know it. 

As a virtual world, it makes sense that the medium of transaction in the metaverse is virtual money. Virtual money already exists in the form of cryptocurrency and other virtual assets. So, it looks like the metaverse is building up block by block, and cryptocurrency and decentralized finance are preemptive of money in the metaverse. 

One of the qualities of the metaverse as postulated by Matthew Ball is a fully functioning economy. And this economy will function with crypto assets. All the major cryptocurrencies may find their way into the metaverse, or the metaverse might also come with its own crypto.

Whatever the case, for the economy of the metaverse to be fully functional, cryptocurrencies and crypto-assets are a necessity rather than a choice. Cryptocurrencies offer the speed, security, and transparency that are required for a virtual world. 

As you know, one thing users will require in the metaverse is an assurance that their transactions and information are secure, and the technical architecture of cryptocurrencies and other crypto assets ensures this. This is one reason I believe that the metaverse cannot do without cryptocurrencies.

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs)

Decentralized Autonomous organizations (DAOs) are a foretaste of what organizations or companies will look like in the metaverse. DAOs will seamlessly fit into the metaverse because they run on the same basic technology as the metaverse. 

They are democratic, autonomous groups that are developed on smart contracts and etched on blockchain. Although DAOs already exist, we are looking at the mainstreaming of a viable idea when the metaverse fully comes.

Wrapping Up

The metaverse will be as broad as the internet when it fully comes. There are debates if it is an improved version of Web 3.0 or both are one and the same thing. But that’s a debate I wouldn’t want to go into right now.

The point I want to make, however, is this; ignoring talks about the metaverse would be like ignoring talks about the internet before it came to be. It is certain that the metaverse is the next direction for the internet. How long it will take before it is fully integrated, though, is an answer that eludes even big tech companies.

Gamestop has the potential to generate more interest in games and NFTs than most other marketplaces that currently exist. As a bonus, they’re advertising no more gas fees when you transact through their NFT marketplace.

How is that possible? And what does it imply for first-time NFT buyers?

How Does the GameStop NFT Marketplace Work?

While the company is still developing its marketplace, the hints it has dropped so far reveal clues as to how the platform is going to work.

It might, for example, take advantage of the Loopring project. Loopring’s GitHub repository has an “NFT-DEV” branch with an amended code, making references to GameStop plus the use of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS).

GameStop’s use of IPFS would just be fitting. The IPFS would provide a decentralized solution for storing and retrieving files, data, websites, and applications.

GameStop will explore the Ethereum blockchain

One intriguing feature of GameStop’s NFT Marketplace teaser page is its Ethereum smart contract address. The page doesn’t provide any other information about it, but it seems to confirm at least one thing. GameStop will explore opportunities in the Ethereum blockchain.

You could say it’s a logical move, given that famous marketplaces such as OpenSea are Ethereum-based.

GameStop NFT platform could be compatible with layer 2

This potential compatibility with Ethereum layer 2 products could also mean savings for users. Layer 2 solutions help reduce overall transaction costs, thus saving users from paying hefty fees for any network activity.

Loopring is one of those layer 2 solutions. If GameStop is indeed going to work with Loopring, or any other layer 2 solutions for that matter, then it would be good news to NFT enthusiasts.

Loopring, in particular, had announced in a LinkedIn post in October 2021 that they’d be enabling NFT support. This move would allow ”anyone to mint and trade NFTs instantly and gas-free.”

The same post also reveals that “this functionality is now the foundation of a new NFT marketplace launching soon.”

While we aren’t sure if that marketplace is actually GameStop, there’s a high chance that it is. Or, GameStop could also be partnering with other similar initiatives.

GameStop’s Call for NFT Creators Is Quite Inviting

The video game giant is ambitious enough to promise to give “power to the players,” “power to the creators,” and “power to the collectors.”

When you click on the “Let’s go” button, you’ll be asked to answer a few questions. The second one is quite interesting. It asks the curious creator about the best way to describe themself.

You either describe yourself as an “independent artist / creator / game dev / meme lord” or a “company / brand / game studio / IP holder.”

Apparently, this distinction tells us at least one thing. GameStop is interested in including both creative individuals and established game studios and companies in its platform.

Individuals—those who choose category A—will then be asked about their experience with creating NFTs or using the Ethereum wallet. The flow of questions reveals that GameStop is welcoming even aspiring NFT creators—artists, for example. They may not yet have prior experience with NFTs, but they could already be creating something worth putting out.

Meanwhile, those who identify with category B will be asked to provide a link to their website or tell GameStop what their organization is all about. They will also be invited to tell more about what they may have in mind while seeking to collaborate with the GameStop NFT Marketplace.

In both cases, it appears that GameStop is still open to many possibilities.

After successfully filling out the form, the interested creator will receive an email confirmation. Once again, GameStop will reiterate in the email that it’s opening up minting on a rolling basis.

GameStop May Take Time Before It Finally Launches Its NFT Marketplace

Damiana Amabile, Director of Product at GameStop, has also made several points on Twitter about how GameStop is going to position its NFT Marketplace among other options. In a Twitter thread in October 2021, Amabile shared how “not easy” it was to purchase an NFT via OpenSea.

Apparently, the director has prior experience with eCommerce. eComm today has conditioned ordinary buyers to be able to “single tap” and checkout on most online stores. And yet, the NFT UX space has yet to reach that level of simplicity. It appears that it’s one of GameStop’s goals; to ease the resistance of first-time NFT buyers when they try to do it in GameStop’s Marketplace.

Another point Amabile made is about “gas fees” and how it’s a foreign concept to a majority of the common people. “Gas fees” may correspond to “shipping fees” in eCommerce, but can cost 10x the price (of regular shipping fees). The director further notes how gas fees as high as ~$100 can turn off newcomers from following through with an NFT purchase.

With these potential customer objections in mind, GameStop might be on its way to bridging the gap between eCommerce and blockchain.

So all in all, the promise and potential are high. The same goes for expectations.

With NFT enthusiasts already hyped up about the GameStop NFT Marketplace launch, it may be better delayed than to be launched buggy and without fulfilling the promises.

But one thing’s been clear; the team behind this ambitious GameStop feat will do all they can to keep their hands busy this entire year of 2022.

With Metamask, you can send, receive, and store Eth-based cryptocurrencies and tokens.

In this article, we’ll show you how to set up a Metamask account for the first time.

Step 1. Install the Metamask extension on your browser.

One of the easiest ways to create a Metamask wallet is to use your favorite browser. You can install the Metamask browser extension on the most popular browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.

Metamask will update their download page to include links to extension installers for other browsers as well as for iOS and Android. Check if your browser is already supported here.

1. For Chrome users, installing MetaMask is as simple as clicking “Add to Chrome” on MetaMask’s Chrome web store page.

2. Click on “Add extension” to proceed with the installation.

3. In your Chrome Extensions list, you can choose to pin MetaMask.

When you do, Chrome will show Metamask’s fox-wolf-inspired icon among your list of pinned Chrome extensions.

Step 2. Create a Metamask account.

After installing Metamask, you will be redirected to the welcome page.

1. Click on “Get Started” to begin setting up your MetaMask account.

2. If you’re new to MetaMask—this article assumes you are—you’ll need to choose the “Yes, let’s get set up!” option on the right. 

3. Click on “Create a Wallet”

4. Click on “I Agree”

5. Create a password for your account.

The password needs to be at least 8 characters long. Click on the corresponding tickbox for the Terms of Use. Then, click the “Create” button.

6. Read and watch the preliminary instructions MetaMask has provided for new users for wallet safety.

The instructions are primarily for keeping your MetaMask wallet and funds safe. Watch the video to get an overview of your crypto wallet.

The video gives you information about your “Secret Recovery Phrase” and what it’s for. Hence, this Secret Recovery Phrase is like your master key. It’s a series of 12 words, and you’ll need it to recover your wallet and funds in case you lose access to it.

Anyone who knows your Secret Recovery Phrase can have all-in access to your MetaMask wallet and take all of your funds.

So, make sure to keep your recovery phrase very secret and very secure.

No one, not even a MetaMask team member, can help you recover your wallet or funds in case you forget your Secret Recovery Phrase.

Write it down somewhere safe, store it in a safety vault, or use a secure password manager.

Anyone asking you for your Secret Recovery Phrase is trying to scam you.

7. See and write down your Secret Recovery Phrase

Once you get this very important point, click on “Next” and on “CLICK HERE TO REVEAL SECRET WORDS” in the page that follows.

Follow the tips in the instructions MetaMask has provided. If you can, carefully store your 12-word recovery phrase in multiple secure locations.

Note: It’s important to write down or store your Secret Recovery Phrase in your password manager before you proceed to the next step.

8. Confirm that you know or have a copy of your Secret Recovery Phrase

Once you click “Next,” you’ll be directed to a page where you’ll be asked to confirm your Secret Recovery Phrase.

You’ll need to click on each word in sequence. Of course, I did not include the entire list of words I got in the screenshot. I also need to keep my 12-word recovery phrase secure.

Click on “Confirm” once you’re done.

9. You’ll receive MetaMask’s congratulatory message after passing the “test.” 

Metamask will remind you one more time to keep your Secret Recovery Phrase safe always.

Once you’ve made sure you’ve secured your MetaMask “master key,” you can proceed and click on “All Done.”

10. See “What’s new” on MetaMask.

The next thing you’ll see is the MetaMask interface. Initially, you might encounter a pop-up that informs you “What’s new” on Metamask.

You can ignore prompts such as these if they don’t require you to take any action. Don’t worry if you don’t understand anything at the moment. You’ll get all things cryptoverse by and by, especially if you read more from our blog.

For now, just click on the “x” at the top right corner of the “What’s new” pop-up to proceed to the next step.

Step 3. Deposit funds

MetaMask’s clean and clutter-free dashboard shows you the amount of ETH you have in your wallet.

Now that you’ve finally set up your MetaMask account, the next step is to make a deposit.

You can buy ETH directly from the MetaMask interface. Simply click on the “Buy” icon to do just that. A “Deposit Ether” pop-up will then appear.

You’ll have three options. You can:

1. Buy ETH with Wyre

This option is useful if you want to use a debit card to pay for your ETH.

Wyre shows you the current ETH exchange rate, transaction fee, and network fee. You can choose your local currency or the currency your debit card uses. As of this writing, Wyre supports about 20+ currencies.

Note that there’s a minimum transaction amount of 0.000025 ETH. 

The following shows a sample total transaction amount once you cross the minimum threshold.

Click on “Next” to enter your payment information.

2. Buy ETH with Transak.

This choice allows you to buy ETH via bank transfer aside from using debit cards. It supports bank transfers from 59+ countries. The ETH you buy goes straight to your MetaMask account.

Transak has slightly higher fees than Wyre. Transak also deducts the fees from the money you intend to shell out from your Visa or Mastercard account. To compare, Wyre calculates the fees after you indicate how much USD (for example) you intend to convert to ETH.

3. Directly deposit ETH you already have.

It’s the most direct way to add Ether into your Metamask wallet. You have the choice to use Etherscan to proceed or to export your private key.

Congratulations, you now have MetaMask!

Setting up your MetaMask wallet is pretty straightforward. Once funded, you can use this wallet to initiate ETH-based transactions.

What MetaMask is for

With MetaMask, you can buy, store, send, and swap ETH with other tokens. It’s a convenient place to manage your digital assets.

The “Swap” option allows you to exchange your ETH with 0XBTC, for example.

Of course, you’ll need enough ETH in your wallet to push the actual swap through.

Personalized settings for your MetaMask account

You can make tweaks to your MetaMask setup on the Settings page.

To access Settings, click on your profile icon in the top right corner of the MetaMask dashboard. Click on “Settings.”

In the “General” Settings, you can set up default currencies for conversion. You also have the option to choose between ETH and Fiat for default values to display.

In the “Advanced” Settings, you’ll find the option to sync accounts and data with your MetaMask mobile device app. 

As of this writing, the option to sync via the browser extension is disabled. You can, however, sync with mobile instead.

Or, if you first set up MetaMask via a browser extension, you may do so via mobile setup.

Setting up MetaMask on iOS

Once you’ve set up Metamask via your browser extension, it’s going to be fairly easy to set it up on your mobile device.

1. Download MetaMask from the App Store.

2. Open MetaMask.

3. Choose the “Import with Secret Recovery Phrase” option instead of the “Create a new wallet” option.

4. Input your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase with spaces.

5. Create a new password and retype it in the “Confirm password” box.

6. If available, you can enable the option to allow MetaMask to use Face ID for your logins.

7. Click on the “IMPORT” button.

Now you’re good to go!

Setting up MetaMask on Android

MetaMask is also fairly easy to install and set up on Android once you’ve done it initially on your Chrome browser.

1. Go to Google PlayStore and download MetaMask.

2. Open the MetaMask Android app.

3. Choose the “Import with Secret Recovery Phrase” option instead of the “Create a new wallet” option.

(Apparently, Android is more strict when it comes to screenshots in some parts of the setup process.)

4. Input your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase with spaces.

5. Create a new password and retype it in the “Confirm password” box. You can use the same password you used in your iOS device—in case you use both.
